This subsector utilises production techniques which go beyond typical water purification processes. Functional bottled water will often include added vitamins, minerals, fruits or herbs. This category includes all functional bottled water, both carbonated and still.
The subsector will primarily include nutraceutical or fortified waters, where various types of fruit or herbal concentrate or vitamin and mineral extracts are added to the bottled water for nutrient value. The product typically carries added calcium and vitamins, or added herbs, such as ginseng or gingko biloba.
”Fitness” waters, which typically contain electrolytes and amino acids as well as added vitamins and minerals, are included here. Sport and Energy drinks are excluded. These products often do not contain colouring, and tend to be a lighter drink than sports drinks such as Gatorade, which often feature higher added sugar or electrolyte content. Leading brands in off-trade volume include, SmartWater, and Propel Fitness Water. Products with both significant amounts of carbohydrate (such as dextrose or glucose) and electrolyte, and which are marketed as recovery beverages should be tracked in Sports Drinks, regardless of product name.
